November 2020 Dear Fellow Deer Farmers What a ridiculous year it has been. We have seen highs and lows throughout the year but our industry is resilient and will endure. From the worst drought in my farming career to the kindest of winters, this has been a year of contrasts. This year we are using the services of bidr.co.nz which is an online live auction site this will run in conjunction with the on farm auction. As the Covid alert levels are uncertain, the auction should still be able to go ahead even at Level 3 or less. However, if we get to Level 4 all bets are off!!! I have thirteen 3yr old stag lots on offer, plus hopefully a small number of velveting stags. The details of the velveting stags will be available on sale day and they will be sold as Lot 14. A special note should be made for Lot 7 – this is the last ever son of Dam 900 to be offered for public sale. His genetic worth should not be underestimated. At catalogue stage, many of the three-year olds were still just breaking into their tops. For this reason, the stags have been catalogued in numerical order. A hand-out with the auction order will be made available on sale day if different. The yearling hind weights are back a little on last year due the drought but I am confident they will all make the 90kg cut-off weight by mating in March. A sale day weight will be available on line and at the auction. I wish you all well for the holiday season and continued success in your deer farming enterprises.
